Why Create a Native Garden?

Critical Habitat

Clean Water & Deep Roots

Clean Water & Deep Roots

Native plants provide food and shelter for our pollinators. Not only do pollinators feed on pollen and nectar, but they also use the plants to make overwintering shelters. Some will hollow out the stem of a plant, some will wrap themselves in a leaf, and some will burrow into the soil under an insulating layer of plant matter to survive the winter.

Clean Water & Deep Roots

Clean Water & Deep Roots

Clean Water & Deep Roots

Native plants have been growing in a given place for a long period of time without the need for human intervention. Their deep, robust root systems are well-suited for local soil types and moisture conditions. Roots infiltrate water runoff from houses and streets and absorb nutrients and pollutants before they reach our groundwater and waterways.

Pollinator Support

Clean Water & Deep Roots

Pollinator Support

We rely on pollinators to help our crops grow. These bees, beetles, butterflies, and birds move pollen from one flower to another, allowing plants to create our foods like apples, berries, and grains for bread. This is a critical service, as one out of three bites of food we eat depends on pollinators to grow. That's a big deal!
