The Mississippi River – Grand Rapids watershed covers 75,778 acres of land in north eastern Minnesota. This watershed is located in parts of Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Itasca, and St. Louis Counties. This is a heavily developed area with 89% of the land privately owned.
Surface Water Assessment Grants through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency funded intensive water monitoring in 2015. The data collected, along with ongoing water monitoring efforts, will be used to complete a Watershed Restoration and Protection Strategy document. This plan will help determine where pollution problems exist in the watershed, along with strategies to help fix them.
